The SNP has today welcomed the announcement made by the First Minister that “the Scottish Government has secured the basis for an agreement in principle” for Liberty House to buy and operate the steel plants at Dalzell and Clydebridge.
Commenting, SNP Candidate for Motherwell and Wishaw Clare Adamson said:
“This is fantastic news for Lanarkshire and is testament to the hard work and tenacity of the Scottish Government, the Scottish Steel Task Force, the trade unions and all of those involved in saving these jobs.
“That we have reached this stage is in no small part down to the strong action taken by the SNP government to maximise the potential for investment, including committing to cutting business rates at the plants for a year.
“Lanarkshire’s steel industry is iconic not just locally but right across Scotland – I sincerely hope that this news will mean Lanarkshire’s furnaces will continue to burn for some time to come.”
Marion Fellows, SNP MP for Motherwell and Wishaw added:
“This is a very encouraging announcement, which will be welcomed by communities across Lanarkshire.
“Thankfully the Scottish Government has made the investment required to keep key workers on standby to safeguard full manufacturing capability, which can help maximise the number of jobs protected.
“This statement has only been made possible because everyone pulled together to support the workers – I look forward to a bright future for the industry in Lanarkshire.”
