SNP SHEDS LIGHT ON UK GOVERNMENT PRIORITIES

Scottish National Party Westminster Leader Angus Robertson MP has called out the UK government on their priorities as it is revealed over 3,000 members of staff in the Department for Work and Pensions were investigating benefit fraud while just 300 HMRC staff were investigating tax evasion of the “super rich”.

Commenting, Marion Fellows, MP for Motherwell and Wishaw said:

“It is telling that this government’s priorities are more staff dedicated to tackling benefit fraud at the DWP than there are staff at HMRC ensuring the super-rich pay their fair share of taxes.

“£30billion is thought to be lost to tax evasion each year whereas only £1billion is lost to benefit fraud.

“Considering how effective the DWP’s sanction regime is at targeting vulnerable members of our community, we can only imagine how effective HMRC would be if they were to target the super-rich in the same manner.

“The Tories are set on persecuting and stigmatising benefit claimants as though the poorest of our society are responsible for austerity, but it is the super-rich, who the Tory Government are protecting, who are to blame for this unnecessary austerity agenda.”
