MP DEFENDS SCOTLAND’S PLACE IN THE EU AND IMPORTANCE TO ENERGY SECTOR

17th May 2016

MP for Motherwell and Wishaw, Marion Fellows, quizzed the Scottish Secretary, David Mundell MP, over the Government’s approach towards the energy sector, following a critical report from EY – a global business services firm.

The EY report condemned the UK Government’s financial neglect and hindering of development in the energy sector. The report claimed this is damaging for the UK’s energy security.

Marion took the opportunity to highlight the importance of remaining in the EU for the UK’s energy development and investment.

Commenting, Marion said:

“The UK Government has failed to properly support and develop the energy sector. It has also made leaving the EU a possibility which will further endanger our energy security.

“Fuel poverty is an outrage in North Lanarkshire, as figures show that as of 2014 there is a staggering 34% of people who can’t afford to heat their homes. Rocketing energy prices has also brought our steel industry to crisis.

“Energy is an essential part of any society, but it is particularly important to Scotland’s priorities as we seek to expand and develop renewables and heat our homes.”
