Today we remember six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust. It marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history.
Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity for people from Motherwell and Wishaw and across the country to reflect on the tragic events of the Holocaust. As the Holocaust moves from living history, to just history, it becomes ever more important that we take the time to remember the victims and also pay tribute to the survivors. I would encourage my constituents to show their support for such an important day.
I also met Zigi Shipper last year and this has made me even more determined to play my part in Holocaust Education. We need to do everything possible to eliminate ethnic cleansisng which is still happening in the 21st Century
I have a very personal reason for marking Holocaust Day. My father, John Fullarton, helped liberate a Concentration Camp and suffered remorse and guilt for the rest of his life.
