This Week #44

27th February 2017

20th – 26th February 2017

On Tuesday, Marion was back at Westminster for a busy day of parliamentary duties and meetings.

The Motherwell & Wishaw MP also received a response for a written question on the treatment of human rights activists on China:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what representations he has made to his Chinese counterpart on the treatment of human rights activists in that country.

Alok Sharma, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs replied:

We regularly raise human rights in interactions with Chinese counterparts. During my visit to China last week I raised the case of the ‘709’ lawyers with Assistant Foreign Minister Liu. We held the China-UK human rights dialogue last October and will be holding another such discussion in April this year.

Wednesday brought with it Prime Minister’s Questions before a busy day of meetings, briefings, and parliamentary duties in London for Marion.

On Thursday, Marion was still hard at work in London, ensuring the voices of local people in the constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw are being heard at Westminster.

On Friday, Marion remained in London in order to support the Private Members’ Bill put forward by SNP colleague, and MP for Banff and Buchan, Eilidh Whiteford.

The Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Ratification of Convention) Bill passed its third reading by 138 votes to 1, despite despicable attempts by Philip Davies MP to filibuster.
