The First Minister has set out a plan for Scotland and our place in Europe and the world. This plan will protect the interests of Scotland – economically and socially. By keeping their election pledge that they were elected on, the Scottish Government will apply for a section 30 order to give the people of Scotland the choice to decide their future – not politicians in Edinburgh or London.
We did not ask to be at this crossroads. The Scottish Government has outlined a number of compromises, but have been repeatedly shunned by the UK Government. We now face two options. To allow the Tories to continue to dominate in Westminster unopposed and do what they wish which would tear our economy and social fabric apart; to allow them to target the disabled and poor while defending the interests of London and wealthy. Or we can decide that we will be a country of openness, of prosperity, of equality and be a nation of equals in the world.
The Scottish Government is still prepared to work with the UK Government, but the Tories must show the same respect to Scotland after 62% voted to remain. If Scotland can be ignored on an issue as important as our membership of the EU and the single market, then it is clear that our voice and our interests can be ignored at any time and on any issue. Scotland must make their voice heard.
