The SNP’s Pensioner Champion and Motherwell and Wishaw candidate, Marion Fellows, addressed the WASPI rally in George Square last Friday labelling the Tories’ pensions strategy as “shameless”.
The WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign is fighting against the Tories’ changes to women’s pension age which has been raised at an increased rate to equal that of men.
However, the women born in the 1950s who are affected by the changes were not notified and will now have to wait longer to access their pension rights.
Speaking after the rally, Marion said:
“Pensions are not a benefit. They are a contractual right. By denying the WASPI women their pension rights, the Tories have broken that contract.
“Everyone must be able to enjoy their retirement. The women affected must therefore be given the opportunity to make suitable arrangements. But the Tories are obsessed with cutting – regardless of who it impacts – and having people work into their old age. This is unacceptable.
“The SNP will oppose Tory austerity every step of the way to support our pensioners. That is why we back justice for the WASPI women and support a pensions triple lock to protect the income and wellbeing of our pensioners.”
