The difficulties facing the Wishaw Post Office are the result of the UK Government’s privatisation regime of a valuable community asset that will impact local people and services.
Pensioners and social security claimants will also be impacted as they often use the Post Office to make withdrawals.
I am deeply concerned that this will affect footfall in the town centre. We need to ensure our high streets are thriving and meeting the needs of the community.
The Post Office needs to provide answers and assurances that services will still be readily available in Wishaw. I will be writing to the UK Government Ministers to demand that they provide these.
If it hadn’t been for the Tories’ privatisation obsession, Post Offices would not be franchised out and they could still remain a community asset. With a bit of investment, they could become a leader in local banking.
