UK GOV PRESSED TO DEVOLVE IMMIGRATION POWERS TO PROTECT SCOTTISH ECONOMY AND SERVICES
Motherwell and Wishaw MP, Marion Fellows, has this week in Parliament urged the UK Government to devolve immigration powers or Scottish GDP could face a 4.5% real term hit by 2040.
The MP warned of the drop in GDP at Home Office questions and said that immigration powers should be devolved so the Scottish Parliament can create a system that meets Scotland’s “needs and values”.
Figures come from Scottish Government analysis released earlier this year which states ending freedom of movement with the EU would be a blow to the Scottish economy.
Commenting, Mrs Fellows said:
The Tories’ fixation with removing peoples’ rights to free movement is not only cruel and harmful to the individuals it targets, but it will also be detrimental to Scotland’s economy as a whole and conflicts with Scotland’s needs and values. Immigration powers must be devolved.
People who choose to make Scotland their home bring both social and economic benefits. They staff our NHS, teach our children and pay into the public purse so services can continue.
Our economy, public services and futures of EU citizens in the UK are being held to ransom by far right Tories who don’t realise the benefits of free movement around Europe. The UK Government are yet again making decisions which suits them, but are contrary to Scotland’s interests.
