Yesterday my office staff met with the Autism Take 5 group at the Daisy Park Community Centre in Motherwell facilitated by Carol Loch and Kate Liggat. It runs every Tuesday morning from 10.30 – 12.30 and one evening per month from 7 – 9pm.
The group is a mixture of mums, grandparents and carers of children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Parents spoke freely and openly about their own situation and difficulties they have encountered. Many spoke about the lack of services and support available to them. This includes children not being able to access education because of a lack of ASN teachers due to this Labour led Council not filling the positions despite receiving the funds from the Scottish Government and a lack of training within mainstream schools on ASD needs.
I have raised these issues and the concerns of parents with NLC previously. There is a desperate need for a vast increase in ASN teachers.
Despite their own struggles this group of strong carers come together to provide support, training, relaxation therapies and advice to each other and new members. This group of volunteers are growing from strength to strength but they desperately need more donations to help them. Donations of funding is always welcome, but they require free professional advice too from anyone with an hour a month or more to spare to visit the group and answer questions/ provide information.
I will be continuing to support this group.
If you would be able to offer assistance to the group, wish to donate or want to go along to a session please contact Carol or Kate via:
