That this House recognises the growing problem of loneliness and isolation among elderly people which has been proven to have detrimental effects on mental health and life expectancy; commends the work of the volunteers at Befriend Motherwell who provide support, social spaces and activities to elderly members of the community to combat loneliness and isolation within the elderly community through one-to-one befriending, group work and telephone befriending; congratulates it on its recent award of £148,667 by the Big Lottery Fund which will allow it to continue to provide its invaluable service to users; and believes the work that it and similar organisations do make great contributions to the social inclusion of elderly people and directly tackles the effects of loneliness and social isolation.

That this House recognises the tremendous efforts and achievements of all British athletes that have represented the UK in international competitions in their various disciplines; congratulates those who have won medals and also those who came close in these competitions; commends them on their excellent sportsmanlike conduct and value for fair competition between athletes; believes that athletes who have been found guilty of doping have cheated sporting athletes out of potential medals and recognition for their determination, hard work and ability; believes that any athlete found to be doping should have all medals retrospectively stripped from them, and properly awarded to those who were placed behind them and sought to partake in fair competition, on the grounds that they have shamed sports through unsportsmanlike conduct and potentially used doping to achieve their accolades in previous competitions; calls on the International Olympic Committee and other governing bodies to enact this policy as a matter of due course; and calls on the Government to undertake measures to ensure this policy is enacted.

That this House recognises the success of NHS Lanarkshire for exceeding the national improvement aim to reduce hospital standardized mortality rates (HSMR) by 20 per cent; notes that the HSMR provides a starting point to assess the factors that can influence mortality and identify areas of improvement; acknowledges that HSMR fell in Monklands hospital by 25.4 per cent, in Wishaw general hospital by 22.7 per cent and in Hairmyres hospital by 20.7 per cent; commends the efforts of staff who work within NHS Lanarkshire who have helped deliver such a large reduction in such a small period of time; and further commends the safety and high quality care that staff are providing to patients.

That this House recognises that May 2016 marks the silver anniversary of Motherwell Football Club’s memorable victory in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final; notes that this triumph led to the club qualifying for European football for the first time in its history, something which has been successfully achieved on a number of occasions since; acknowledges that 2016 also marks 130 years since the formation of Motherwell Football Club; and commends the valuable work done by the club within Motherwell and Wishaw constituency, particularly through its Community Trust, which focuses primarily on the physical and mental wellbeing of local people of all ages.

That this House recognises the Scottish Government’s extensive efforts in finding a new owner for the steelworks at Dalzell and Clydebridge in Lanarkshire, including the establishment of the Scottish Steel Task Force, which was a constructive group of partners including Tata Steel, North and South Lanarkshire Councils, trade unions, political parties, the UK Government, Scottish Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland and PACE; further recognises the work carried out to encourage prospective buyers by actions such as energy efficiency measures, securing a reduction of business rates and a staff retraining fund for retained staff of £195,000; congratulates and thanks all bodies involved in securing a future for steel in Scotland resulting in retaining jobs, including Tata Steel, Dalzell and Clydebridge steelworkers and their families and trade unions; welcomes the statement by Liberty House who agreed that this would not have happened without the efforts of the Scottish Government; and particularly congratulates and recognises the efforts of Energy Minister Fergus Ewing and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in fulfilling their vow of leaving no stone unturned in finding a new owner for Scotland’s steel works, forging a bright, new era for an iconic and key industry of Scotland’s economy.
