Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows has been honoured by a major cancer charity.

The SNP MP won the title of Political Voice of the Year in the Shining Star Awards run by Sarcoma UK in an event held at No 10 Downing Street.

Marion’s husband George sadly died from sarcoma in 2018.

In October 2022, the MP used parliamentary questions to ask how the health department will improve outcomes for children with sarcoma and increase awareness about sarcoma and other childhood cancers with the public and primary care professionals.

She later co-hosted an early diagnosis event at the Houses of Parliament.

Sarcomas are uncommon cancers that can affect any part of the body, on the inside or outside, including the muscle, bone, tendons, blood vessels and fatty tissues. There are around 100 different sub-types of sarcoma cancer.

Speaking on being awarded Sarcoma’s Political Voice of the Year, Ms Fellows said: “It is a huge honour to be recognised in this way. This is a charity which through its funding for research is making a huge difference every day.

“Research is the key to help improve future treatments and by raising awareness, the charity also promotes early diagnosis which is obviously crucial for treatment.

“So I am humbled by being given the title of Political Voice of the Year. I’ll continue to make my voice heard in parliament for such worthy causes.”

Sarcoma UK is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments.

It is the only cancer charity in the UK focusing on all types of sarcoma. It is now one of the biggest funders of sarcoma research in the UK, having invested more than £5.5 million to 76 research projects to date.

The MP was also recently awarded Parliamentarian of the Year by disability rights organisation Sense UK. Sense supports those who are deafblind or have complex disabilities. The organisation has over 65 years of expertise in providing personalised support for people of all ages — from early life to adulthood.

Posting on X, Sense wrote: “Serving as SNP spokesperson for disabilities, Marion is an advocate and champion for disabled people, and regularly stands up for the rights of disabled people.

“She has recently spoken out about changes in Work Capability Assessment rules and put forward a debate on the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on disabled people. Two causes you all know are currently very important to us. Thank you and congratulations, Marion!”
